Foreigners' Marriage in The Arab Republic of Egypt
Notarization of foreigners' marriage contracts in Egypt, according to Law No. 68 of 1947 and its amendment by Law No. 103 of 1976.
First: General Terms:
The second paragraph of Article (5) of Act No. 103 of 1976 stipulates that notarization of foreigners’ marriage requires the following:
- The foreigner shall attend in person.
- The age difference between spouses shall not exceed twenty-five years.
- The foreigner shall provide two certificates from the competent authority in the country of his nationality or from its consulate in the Arab Republic of Egypt, one stating that it does not oppose the marriage and the other one includes data about date and place of birth, religion, profession, country of residence, marital status in terms of the number of previous marriages and wives, sons and financial status and sources of income. Certificates shall be legalized from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Providing both spouses birth certificates.
- Sealed residence on passport.
- Two witnesses.
- Stamp.
Second: Cases of Foreign Marriage:
First, Marriage of Egyptian Male to a Female Citizen of the following countries: -
{Philippines - Malaysia - Thailand - Sri Lanka- Bangladesh - India - Pakistan - Israel - Israeli}
- A wife shall provide a certificate from her embassy in Cairo stating her marital status and religion, the original and the translated copy shall be authenticated from the embassy then legalized from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Shall have a valid residence (not for tourism) affixed on her passport for at least 6 months.
- Providing an independent certificate from Passports, Immigration and Nationality Administration stating she obtained such residence.
For wives of citizens of Russia or the Soviet Union:
- A wife shall have a residence for non-Tourism, stated in her passport.
- Shall obtain a certificate from her embassy in Cairo of her marital status, in case she had never married before, Religion, the certificate shall be authenticated from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- In case she is divorced or deceased by her husband, the date of divorce shall be mentioned with supporting documents and - the Embassy does not mind of her marriage - ratifying the certificate from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Second, Marriage of female Egyptian / Foreigner:
-For the husband:
- Personal or family Identification Card and a copy of it.
- In case the husband is a Christian, he shall submit a certificate of devoid of inhibitions from his affiliated church, accredited bythe Patriarchate and in case of being divorced, the husband shall submit the final judgment of divorce or a certificate of the death of the wife as well as the previous contract to marry her, In addition to the free inhibitions certificate and explicit mentioning of his marital status.
- In case the husband is a member of the armed forces, police or other security services or the diplomatic corps, he shall submit the approval of his work, in case of the Egyptian husband; his military status shall be provided as well.
- Presence of two witnesses, providing their Identification Cards.
-For the wife:
- Certificate from her state embassy- in Cairo –stating religion, no objection of marriage and marital status.
- The wife, who is outside Egypt, mandates the office with a power of attorney, which contains all required ratifications to complete the procedures of her marriage to the defined and known husband in the office.
- Never married before and in case of being divorced, a proof of the date of divorce shall be submitted.
- In case of being a widow, she shall state the date of the death of the ex-husband and his name through documents submitted to the Embassy.
- Valid passport with a valid residence.
- Number of five Photos (size 4 × 6) of spouses.
Third, Marriage of Foreigner / Egyptian Female:
-For the husband:
- The husband shall submit a certificate issued by the embassy in Cairo, illustrating his name, date of birth, marital status in terms of the number of wives and sons or already married his job, monthly income and source of the income.
- His presence in person when making documenting the marriage contract.
- The age difference between spouses does not exceed twenty-five years.
- Have a valid passport with residence·
-For the wife:
- Submit her birth certificate or an official extract of it.
- Her Identification Card and a copy of it.
- A divorced wife shall submit a proof of her divorce.
- A widow shall submit a death certificate and marriage contract of her ex-husband.
- In case the wife is a Christian, she shall submit a certificate of devoid of inhibitions from her affiliated church, supported by the Patriarchate
Note: you can mandate the office with a Power of Attorney, in case of non-existence of any party in Egypt.
Forth, Marriage of Foreigner / Foreigner:
-For the husband:
- Certificate from his state embassy- in Cairo - indicating his date of birth - the profession - the marital status - Religion - the absence of legitimate or legal contradictions of the marriage with ratification of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
-For the wife:
- Certificate from her state embassy - in Cairo - indicating her date of birth - the profession - the marital status - Religion - the absence of legitimate or legal contradictions of the marriage with ratification of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Number of five Photos (size 4 × 6) of spouse.
- Presence of two witnesses, providing their Identification Cards.
Note: in case of being in Egypt, each of the parties shall have with non-tourism residence; otherwise, being abroad each party can mandate the office with a Power of Attorney to complete the marriage procedures.
